SYNOPSIS
 Just as he had three-peated at the Memorial Tournament in his last win, Woods did the same at Firestone Country Club. His third straight win at the NEC Invitational brought Woods' victory haul for 2001 to six and locked up the PGA TOUR's Player of the Year Award yet again. Woods started the final round two strokes behind Jim Furyk, and with the threat of thunderstorms in the forecast, tournament officials moved up the start of the final round -- which was turned out to be particularly prudent. When both players got up and down for birdie from the back bunker at the 18th hole, they were tied at 268 and headed for a playoff. Woods ended up winning on the seventh extra hole with a 2-foor-birdie putt. "It was a war out there," Woods said. "Neither of us was going to give an inch. When we didn't mess up -- and we did make our share of mistakes out there -- we made some big putts, big saves, hole-outs, you name it. Today was a lot of fun; win or lose. It was just fun to compete like that where you were tested to the absolute utmost."
