SYNOPSIS
 This one was surprisingly close given Woods' most recent major victories -- 12 strokes at the U.S. Open and eight at the British Open. He entered the final round at Valhalla with a one-stroke lead over Bob May but needed a playoff to win his third straight major and become the first man since Denny Shute in 1937-37 to successfully defend his title at the PGA. May closed with a 66 to Woods' 67, with both men shooting 31 on the back nine, but the No. 1 player in the game won the three-hole aggregate playoff -- thanks to a birdie at the 16th hole. Woods became the first man since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three majors in a single season, and he is the only man to hold the scoring records in relation to par at all four majors. "This was a memorable battle," Woods said. "¦ We never backed off from one another, birdie for birdie, shot for shot, we were going right after each other. It has to go down as one of the best duels in the game in major championships."
